sacred falls

last week chase and i decided to go on a hike after work. it was our week break we had to spend together before chase started school again on monday. so we made the best of every day by going on a fun adventure and surfing as much as possible. this hike is stunning and honestly one of my favorites here on oahu. it's called sacred falls and for obvious reasons. it truly is a sight to see. i have done this hike once before, but chase never had so it was fun exploring with him.

sacred falls is really close to our house, about a 10-15 minute drive. you walk through a grass field, walk around a fence and down a long grassy path, then you hit a fork with signs. stay to the left at the fork, close to the riverbed. every time you're in nature its always best to follow the water. then you follow the path for a ways through the beautiful jungle full of aloe plants and lots of passion fruit, and end up along the riverbed. there you continue through an opening into a deep, narrow, and rocky canyon with a beautiful waterfall and fresh water pool to swim in. watch out, it's freezing! i about died going in. i have become such a wuss to the cold since living here. i guess my idaho born and raised roots of swimming in freezing lakes and rivers already wore off.

the rocky canyon has enormous steep rock walls that widen as they get closer to the ground. looking straight up in this canyon is mesmerizing. above the falls there are even more rock cliffs and pools that i have no idea how to know exactly what's up there but by helicopter. this is where the hike get's dangerous and the reason why it's illegal. you will see signs posted everywhere along this hike telling you to turn around and the fine is not a nice one. but we were fine and so are many of the other locals that do this hike on a regular basis. it's just important to hike it at your own risk, and make sure you are smart. never go after it has been raining a lot because there have been mud slides and falling rocks that have killed people here in the past and trapped some under rubble causing injury. i won't go into that story, but it's important to take proper precaution and be wary that if you get caught entering this hike you may get a nasty fine.

chase and i love to go on adventures and explore the outdoors. nothing makes us happier than what mother nature freely offers all around us. it's so important to get out there and enjoy our world's creations. there is a certain peace that can be found in nature that i don't think can be found anywhere else. am i sounding like a hippie yet? i hope so. cause it's true.

  1. The photos of the hike and the falls are gorgeous! You have an eye for capturing nature Lisa. :) I live that you even got a shot of the cairns (stacked rocks that tell hikers they're on the right trail:). Which was definitely needed by the sound of it...so glad you guys were safe! Looks like it was worth it though, even if the water was frigid. :) Glad you guys had such a fun last free-day before classes for chase!
