since i started college at byuidaho, i have been all over the board with my major. i started out as health science, changed to business management, changed again to health science, then changed to nursing. i applied to nursing school twice at byui and got rejected both times. then i decided to transfer to byuhawaii. guess it was meant to be, i met my husband :). and now that i am here, it was best for me to major in exercise sports and science to only give me a year in a half more of school instead of at least two with biology. no thanks! so six years later and wiser too, here i am. and i am finally doing my internship!
i am graduating in less than 3 weeks now, which is totally awesome. and even better i just made things definite for my internship as of yesterday. i am interning at the ko'olauloa community health and wellness center (hence their logo above). there are two branches, one in hauula and one in kahuku. great for me, because they are each only a 10 minute drive away! i'm in for a wild ride. lets just say it will be a busy spring and summer for me, and unpaid at that. humph. real life is hitting me! since i have no idea what direction i want to take my degree upon graduation, this will be great for me to narrow down my view. i love exercise, i love health, i love nutrition, i love weird diseases/viruses/bacteria, and i am blown away by our bodies (seriously amazing). hopefully through this internship i will receive some clarity on my lot in life.
i will be shadowing two doctors. one is a family nurse practitioner, and one is an internal medicine doctor. awesome, i am seriously so excited to see what i see and learn what i learn! this will help me figure out if i really am interested in pursuing nursing, ultra sound technician, radiology, or pediatrics. i will also be attending weekly classes teaching about diseases, bacteria/viruses, stds, nutrition, health awareness, etc. that will give me a great feel for community health and promotional type work. on the side i will also be working with a lady who cares for pre and post pregnant women (perinatal care). i am very excited about this since i love babies and learning about pregnancy. i will assist her with whatever she needs and help with a food bank for expecting and new mothers in need. on top of all of this, i will be assisting another lady at the clinic with events and a cancer research program. this coming tuesday, there is a relay for life event for cancer survivors. i am beyond excited to assist others, be inspired, and grow to love the people of the community i live in. i will be sitting at a booth representing the health center, taking peoples glucose levels, blood pressures, BMIs, etc. while informing them of what our clinic has to offer. i cant wait to grow and learn with this internship!
